Deep Dive Discussion
Buildings and Energy
January 28, 2021
The discussion about energy efficiency in buildings was well-attended, with over 50 participants.
Chris Allen of Landform Architecture gave an interesting presentation about passive housing principles using two local examples, the Eco Sage subdivision on the Penticton Indian Reserve and the Okanagan College Childcare Centre.
David Kassian, City of Penticton Community Sustainability Coordinator, provided an update on the City’s climate action planning, new BC Step Code implementation, the Home Energy Loan Program (HELP), and community emissions associated with buildings.
There was an active Q & A session after each presentation that covered many thoughtful, detailed questions.
The last part of the evening centered around the question
‘What can we do locally to reduce carbon emissions from buildings?’.
Discussion focused on energy co-ops for group purchasing of solar panels and other alternative energy infrastructure, and use of local bylaws to encourage sustainable design of new homes and subdivisions.
